The Problem

The Uighur community, a Turkic ethnic group originating from the Xinjiang China, is also compelled to flee China on the grounds of oppression and persecution to places like Kyrgyzstan. However, seeking refuge in such countries has made them susceptible to being victims of similar atrocious acts; one such act is a form of forced marriage called bride kidnapping, or ‘Ala Kachuu’. This was considered as a romantic Kyrgyz tradition where the prospective groom will ‘kidnap’ the prospective bride from her home and essentially marry her. However now Ala Kachuu occurs literally as the name suggests, with Uighur women most vulnerable to it. As is inevitable, most of these marriages end up in domestic violence, repeated rape, forced abortions and eventually broken families. The remnants and the worst affected are of course the women who cannot return to their home.

The Proposal

To establish research on the marginalisation of Uighur women, their rights and their ill effects of Ala Kachuu. It is intended that with the help of public support and financial aid, Restless Beings will be held responsible for propelling their plight to the wider public but also, to establish a counselling session for women affected by Ala Kachuu, aiding, assisting and supporting Uighur women in Kyrgyzstan to rebuild their lives after the fall out of Ala Kachuu.
