The events will be raising important funds for our Women's Centre so we can continue to provide much needed services for over 300 women who regularly visit.
The Restless Beings Women's Centre has been open for a year and has become a vital part of the community.
Supporting 100 women regularly with up to 300 women having access, the women really appreciate the privacy they get both inside and outside in the small private garden where they tend to the flowers and vegetables grown there.
Although they are now safer from the violence they faced in Burma, Rohingya women continue to struggle. Restless Beings has interviewed countless women and girls in the last decade and gathered shocking testimonies of suffering ranging from being raped by the military to losing children as they crossed the border. They are dealing with immense trauma which continues into the camps with many cases of gender-based violence, child and forced marriages, and trafficking of women and girls into sex work overseas.
The space is being run by women, for women, of all ages, with the needs, rights, dignity and safety of Rohingya women at the heart of all services. It exists as a safe space and provides some respite for the women who unfortunately have (and are still undergoing) various forms of trauma.
The centre provides the following vital services to the women:
- Dignified breastfeeding room
- Discreet showering
- Sanctified prayer rooms
- Psycho-social counseling
- Sanitary products in line with faith and culture
- Clean drinking water
- Basic education
- Celebrate cultural and religious occasions with the women
- Gardening and social safe spaces
To support one Rohingya woman for a whole year costs just £250 annually - that's less than £5 per week. This includes the running of all the above services.
Thank you for any donation you can make big or small to help us continue to run this vital centre.
