The Kimberley Process was a major international effort to prevent conflict diamonds from entering global diamond trade. Hailed at the beginning, it is now at crossroads. Meanwhile, other efforts - legislative and voluntary - aim to ensure that trade in other minerals and commodities doesn't fuel conflict. Such efforts are necessary but may not be sufficient.

Salil Tripathi is Director of policy at the Institute for Human Rights and Business (www.ihrb.org), a global think tank to promote respect for human rights among businesses. He has been adviser to many global initiatives and written on the theme of business and conflict. He was earlier policy adviser at International Alert and researcher at Amnesty International.
